A Marian Rosary for Anglicans

[Note:] The Marian Rosary was formalized by Pope Pius V in 1569, 10 years after the Act of Uniformity. Though often attributed to St Dominic, in reality the ultimate origins of the Marian Rosary are unknown, though many different types exist, and a variety of legends abound. That it could have originated, in what we know as the Dominican form, from the British Isles would not be unheard of.

The text used is taken from the Anglican Breviary, and follows the instructions given on pages 1481 and 1482 of that volume, with additions taken from the Proper of the Feast of Our Lady of Victory, and the Common Forms. The additions are intended to follow the traditional uses of the Rosary in both the English and Vatican churches, and are especially appropriate for group devotional use.

In its simplest form, the Marian Rosary begins (and ends) with the Sign of the Cross, followed by the Pater Noster. Say an Ave Maria for each bead within a mystery, and conclude with the mystery with a Gloria Patri. Procede to the next mystery, or conclude for the day, (with a Marian Antiphon if desired). You can break up the mysteries one per day (see below), or the entirety once per day. The mysteries begin with faith, hope, and charity for the first three beads, followed by the joyful, sorrowful, and glorious mysteries. You will note that when you are done, you will have said 150 hail Mary's, one for each Psalm, (sometimes called the Marian Psalter). For those who take issue with the doctrines of the assumption and coronation of Mary, I have included an alternate for the glorious mysteries of the second coming, and final judgement.

There are four Marian Antiphons, one for each season, the first of which has two variations between Advent and Christmas season. Sometimes these are simplified to use only the Salve, Regina, often without concluding collect and May help divine....

Cruciform

Make the Sign of the Cross, and say, In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prepatory Prayer (E465)

Let us pray.

O God, whose only-begotten Son, by his life, death, and resurrection, hath obtained for us the rewards of everlasting salvation: grant, we beseech thee; that mindful of these mysteries, our devotion may ever bud forth as the rose, in honour of the blessed Virgin Mary, and that we may both follow the examples and attain to the benefits that thou dost shew forth therein. Through the same Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord. Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end.

R.  Amen.

Apostles Creed (A2)

I BELIEVE in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary: Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried: He descend in hell; The third day he rose again from the dead: He ascended in heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty: From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost: The holy Catholic Church; The Communion of Saints: the Forgiveness of sins: The Resurrection of the body: And the + Life everlasting. Amen.

Individual Bead

At each individual bead that seperates a decade, or the first three beads (or trinity) preceding the medal, say the Our Father.

Lord's Prayer (A2)

Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. Amen.

Three Beads

Object of Contemplation: Faith, Hope, and Charity

Hail Mary (A2)

Say three Hail Mary's, one for each of the three beads.

Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee : Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners ; Now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Consecutive Beads or Decades

For each decade, contemplate a mystery, announcing it before the Our Father. Say the Ave Maria (Hail Mary) for each consecutive bead, and close each set of Hail Mary's with the gloria patri (Glory Be). Use the chart of Mysteries below as a guide for which set of Mysteries are to be said on which day, (and what scriptures to read during the announcement, if desired), or say all three sets of Mysteries per day.

Glory Be (A2, B3)

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

1. Alma Redemptoris Mater (Sunday from Advent until Lent)

Kindly Mother of our Redeemer ; great portal of heaven ever open, the sea's far-shining star : O succour thy people who though fallen strive to rise again. A. Versicle, Response, and Collect (Advent)

V.  The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary.
R.  And she conceived by the Holy Ghost.

Let us pray.

We beseech thee, O Lord, pour thy grace into our hearts: that as we have known the incarnation of thy Son Jesus Christ by the message of an Angel; so by his Cross and passion we may be brought unto the glory of his resurrection. Through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord. Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end.

Hail, O Virgin, most renowned,
For thy grace and beauty crowned:
Hail, O truly worthy Maiden:
Pray Christ for us so burden-laden.

V.  My praise by thee accepted be, O hallowed Virgin.
R.  Obtain for me strength against thine enemies.

Here is added silently Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end: Amen.
